The Lake District and Cumbria is a fantastic place to visit when planning a UK holiday. The Lakeland and Cumbria area has long been popular with British tourists and those visiting the UK from abroad.

If you are a  family looking for a relaxed country break then Cumbria is well worth the visit. Lakeland areas such as Catbells by Derwent Water, Keswick fells and Loughrigg Fell near Grasmere and Ambleside all have family friendly walks. Other low lying easy walking routes can be found around the north side of Skiddaw, or the fells around Shap. Views in this Lakeland area are truly inspiring and walks in The Lake District can be anything from a short ramble to a full expedition.

Cumbria and the Lake District also have some more taxing climbs and walks such as those around Scafell Pike. Scafell Pike is England’s highest point rising to 978m (3209ft).

Cycling is a popular pastime in Cumbria and bicycles can be hired individually or for the whole family! There are easy routes and more rugged tracks for the mountain bikers who visit. Easy cycle routes exist around Whinlatter Forest to the north-west of Keswick and Grizedale Forest to the west of Windermere. Mountain bikers will prefer routes around Skiddaw.

The Cumbrian landscape lends itself well to outdoor pursuits such as ‘Go Ape’ climbing centre, and is also popular with horse riding. Paragliders take advantage of the thermal flows which react to the undulating landscapes below.

A great way to see the Lake District is to actually take to the Lakes by boat. Various water sports and water activities exist on the larger ‘Lakes’ such as Ullswater, Windermere and Derwent Water. Visitors can hire self-drive motor boats, canoes, dinghies, windsurfers, or rowing boats.
